Instagram Baseball at York Revolution

Today was Opening Day for the Atlantic League in York, and since I didn’t have any obligations to shoot the game for anyone, I decided to Instagram the hell out of it in the spirit of Brad Mangin. Every single photo here was shot with and edited on an iPhone 4, using Snapseed and Instagram. Now that I’ve got this out of my system, I’ll focus on using my real cameras for the rest of the season.

One of my first assignments for my new part-time position with the Hanover Evening Sun led me to a Confederacy-themed cat show in Gettysburg. I’ve photographed dog shows before, but the two hardly compare. I must have looked confused, given that no fewer than five people came up to me and asked if it was my first show. Anyway, all of the cat ladies (and they really don’t mind being called that) – and gentlemen – were wonderfully nice. Glad I got to experience something new.

Spring Grove Wrestling

I’ve been wanting to shoot wrestling at Spring Grove Area High School for more than a year but never had the chance. The gym where wrestling matches are held uses a single overhead flood light mounted inside the scoreboard aimed directly over the mat. That by itself is an awesomely cool setup – it effectively illuminates just the white (!) mat and knocks the entire gym, bleachers and background down about five stops. It’s a great effect, but still a little too dark and unreliable with shadows and mixed color temperature of the cycling light. Ambient exposure with the single light over the mat in the gym is 1/500, 2.8, ISO 6400.

To solve that problem, I cross-lit the mat with two strobes (zoom set at 105mm) mounted on an elevated balcony above the gym floor. Then I moved around a lot.

Rodeo in Frederick County Maryland

For most of my professional life, I’ve lived and worked west of the Mississippi –– Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas. But in all those years and all those assignments, I never photographed a rodeo. In fact, I’ve only been to one rodeo, and it happened to be right in my home state of…Maryland. Granted, this was in 2009, which is practically ages ago in my development and maturation as a photographer. I wasn’t even enrolled in photojournalism coursework at the University of Missouri yet. Anyway, just for fun, I was going through my archives and decided to do a re-edit and pull some images from that event. This is what I came up with.

Pennsylvania Farm Show: Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest

The Pennsylvania Farm Show claims to be the “largest indoor agricultural event held in the United States.” After navigating through the exhibitions and crowds at the expo center in Harrisburg I have no reason to doubt that claim. I’ve photographed a lot of fairs and agricultural events, but I usually approach them from a broad angle. This time was different. I was at the farm show to photograph a pie contest, and only a pie contest. For five hours, I chatted up volunteers, judges, contestants while hanging out behind the scenes at the contest. If there’s one thing I took out of this experience, it’s that people take their pies WAY more seriously than I ever could have imagined.

The Space Shuttle Enterprise “flew” over New York City…

And visitors flocked to see the Space Shuttle Discovery in its new permanent resting spot at the National Air and Space Museum in Virginia.

Crazy people (myself included) waded into the 34-degree Susquehanna River for a Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge.

Willie Nelson concerts continued to attract all kinds of characters…

As did Mitt Romney rallies…

Where the Republican candidate remained in good spirits until the bitter end.

Family members grieved the loss of a loved one in the chaos of the streets after a shooting…

And in the serenity of a church.

Firefighters protected and served at their own expense.

Kids played in the frigid winter snow…

And relaxed in the coolness of a summer waterfall…

And rolled around in weird bubble things…

And watched in youthful awe and excitement at an airshow…

And played the drums to the rhythm of their own beats.

Students graduated from high school…

And from college.

People went about their daily lives, whether they were a maid vacuuming a New York City apartment…

A woman buying lunch from a Dallas food truck…

A man making lunch on his real Texas barbecue pit…

Two famous actors goofing around in a hotel room…

Or just this man dressed in black from head-to-toe eating an orange slushie with an orange guitar on a bench at the State Fair of Texas.

Meanwhile, a former heroin dealer served his prison sentence…

As the mother of a teenage heroin user reflected upon her daughter’s addiction…

As her daughter began her college education after making a full recovery.

People paid respectful visits to the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota…

While just a few miles away on the other side of the reservation protestors clashed with police over alcohol laws in White Clay, Nebraska.

In North Dakota, oilfield workers wished they were anywhere but there…

But will stay for the money as long as the wells keep pumping, the earth continues to be fracked, and the gas keeps flowing.
