I’m over it. Really. It’s just a game and we’ve still got seven to go. Looking back though, last night was one of those surreal experiences you simply never forget.

Sure, everyone’s gonna talk about the torrential rain and the driving wind and the chilling cold. That was undoubtedly a factor. But to me, the most notable thing about last night was the overall purity and rawness of the game. Due to a power outage on campus, there was no $3.8 million scoreboard with special effects, no blaring music, no ads and not even a public address system. Even the play clock was out, and referees resorted to hand signals. There was only The Game; the players and a marching band. Actually, two marching bands, which competed against each other pretty much the whole game because no one could come on the PA to stop them.

As far as actually photographing the game, I’m not here to complain about weather and conditions and how much of a disadvantage that may have been. As professionals, we adapt and deal with what we’re given. I took it as an opportunity to make some unique pictures in a situation I rarely get to work in. In fact, I’ve only photographed one other sports event in the rain before, an NCAA soccer regional, and even that was nothing like last night. Overall, I had an awesome time. Now just let me finish drying out my gear before I have to do it again.

Surrealism

I love shooting afternoon games in Mizzou Arena because there are giant windows that let natural light pour onto the court and make photos look incredibly dynamic, almost strobed. It also helps when there’s a ton of unusual action, as there was in this game against Nebraska which Missouri won, 70-47.

Shucked.
