A Rock Bridge receiver beats two Hickman defenders to haul in a 35-yard touchdown reception as time expires in the first half.
I haven’t been to a high school game in awhile. Like, more than three years. And I’ve never been to a JV game.
To help Chris get some practice (and just for fun) we headed over to Hickman High School to photograph last night’s JV football game vs. Rockbridge High School. It was pretty much everything I expected: a mistake-filled eyesore to watch, but a potentially great environment for photos. Not great in terms of the light (after sun set, the field was rendered as dark as a cave), but having unfettered access, clear sight lines, uncrowded sidelines, clean backgrounds, and little to no pressure were all welcome changes from my usual experiences shooting college games.
After about two handfuls of fumbles and more turnovers-on-downs than I can remember, Hickman eked out a 21-14 overtime win, aided by none other than a Rock Bridge fumble on their first OT possession.

Mudcat, of the Music Maker Revue, sprawls out on a blanket while on a foray into the crowd during his performance Friday.
Since I’m not currently working for any publication or newspaper and was thus unable to get credentialed for the festival, I set out with a camera and two lenses to see how much access I could get. While I couldn’t break through the barricades around the stage like the “real” media, I did the best I could from the fringes.
Best part about not working/being on deadline? Being able to relax and completely enjoy the shows without worrying about rushing back to the office to punch out captions (although I did that anyway on my own time). I got to meet a lot of awesome people, from musicians, fans, fellow photographers and even the production crew. A special shout out to everyone with the Music Maker Revue — y’all seriously rock and keep the music alive. It was great to get to know some of you personally this weekend!

On Saturday I shot from the photo deck on top of the press box at Faurot Field for the first time. With the 6 p.m. kickoff time, I was hoping for some nice light and shadows to include in shots from a high angle. Unfortunately, the sun was pretty diffused by the cloudy sky so the shadows and highlights weren’t as stark as they could have been. There also wasn’t much action in Missouri’s first two offensive series, so there wasn’t much to shoot. I’ll try for something better at a later game.

For our second assignment in Fundamentals of Photojournalism, we had to take 10 portraits of people around Columbia, conduct brief interviews, write detailed captions about each subject and make an 11×17 print of all the images (above). I chose to move farther away from campus and explore areas north of Broadway where I don’t usually go in order to find people that (hopefully) no one else would. One other classmate did encounter Larry later the same day as I so that plan didn’t entirely work.
All portraits were shot with a Nikon 85mm f/1.4 lens on a D700 body and were converted to grayscale. Click here to view a high resolution PDF of the print.
