On a humble farm within sight of the Shoe House in Hellam Township, a miniature horse determinedly plods through several inches of snow. Atop a small, wheeled carriage harnessed behind the barely 32-inch high Bella, driver Hannah Bigler, a 15-year old sophomore at Eastern York, steers the tiny horse between obstacles as pellets of sleet fall.

The scene is nothing unusual at Grey Horse Stable in Hellam Township, owned by Pam Kister, 56, of Mount Wolf. Lacking an indoor arena and with a horse expo just days away, conditioning and training must go on. Bearing the elements is no problem for Kister, her horses or students. Over the last 15 years, Kister built Grey Horse from the ground up into a safe place where all who love and respect horses are welcome.

“I don’t have a beautiful facility, but it is a good working facility,” said Kister. Kister applies her background in marketing to score donations and deals to help stay afloat in what amounts to a very expensive hobby. “I make it work. If I want to do it, I get it done,” said Kister, who has had jumps and obstacles built from scratch and eschews traditional bedding for less expensive shredded newsprint. Her scrappiness is even evident in the horses and ponies she has on the farm. “I’ve worked with horses that rescues have turned down, and turned them around to have a purpose,” she said.

Kister currently mentors about 20 students in various disciplines, from driving, dressage, riding and therapy programs for individuals with disabilities.

Along with Curtis Pierce and Anne Councill, Kister has been instrumental in bringing the rapidly expanding equine discipline of carriage racing to Pennsylvania and the Horse World Expo in Harrisburg, where it appeared last year for the first time.

At its best, the sport is fast, flashy and fun for participants and spectators. The timed event features navigable obstacles, tight turns, and point deductions are taken for mishaps. “We’re trying to show people there’s more to driving than trotting gently along,” said Kister.

This year’s Expo featured carriage driving derby events all four days in the Large Arena at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Races are conducted in two divisions; miniatures and ponies, and larger horses. Teams often decorate their horses and outfits with elaborate themes. The demonstrations at the Expo aren’t meant to showcase high-profile drivers, of which there are only about 200 in the United States, but rather ordinary drivers with passion and enthusiasm for the sport.
